The next day she went out to do some groceries and noticed a strange man following her and looking at her all the time. She credited this ability of hers to her father, he had taught her well; she could make out if anybody was keeping an eye on her. She quickly finished her work and went home. That evening she noticed that he was outside her house smoking a cigarette and waiting for her to step outside.
She got so scared she didn’t go out for the next two days and wanted him to go away on his own but obviously that didn’t happen; the third day that man knocked on her door. “Who are you? What do you want? I’m armed” she said from inside her door “Don’t worry I don’t want to harm you, I just need to talk to you for five minutes” he said “Alright” she said and reluctantly opened the door “Who are you?” she asked before letting him in “I’m a friend, trust me, my name is Rajat” he said “I didn’t recognize you” she said “Our fathers worked together and now I, err I mean you and I will be taking over” he said “Let me come in and I will explain everything” he said and she kept looking at him. There was something in his eyes she couldn’t pinpoint it then. “Both our fathers worked as a team which I’m sure you know by now. I assisted my father on several of his expeditions but your father didn’t want to drag you in this so he never told you anything, he wanted us to find the hidden treasure and reap the benefits. So that no one can outreach the other one, both of them had half a piece of the map. My father lost his hearing a few years ago on one of the expeditions and since then I have been doing his work. You just got into it, I think you’ll need my help” he explained “I think I’m getting what you’re saying but how do I know you will not cheat me and take all the treasure for yourself” she said “You will have to trust me, here let me show you a picture” he said and took out a picture of his father with Anita’s father on one of their dig’s. “Oh my God, he looks so handsome” she said looking at the picture and his gaze was fixed on her. “So are we okay now?” he asked “Yes” “So what do we know so far?” he asked trying not to show that he was blushing. “Well, the first clue was in the letter I got from my father and the second was inside the grandfather clock, here” she said “Treasure lies in the hands of God, what is that suppose to mean? Do you know what it means?” he asked “No, I’m stuck here” she said “Well, let’s think. Did your father say anything about this ever?” “Umm, no” “Did he take you anywhere special?” “I don’t think so” “Wait! We did go to this museum very often and it had a small church inside it, we loved going there. Does that count?” “Yes, maybe this is the place. Let’s go” What they found there was another clue, ‘he who deserves it will find it in his own time’ “Another stupid clue” he said “It’s not stupid, maybe they don’t want us to find the treasure right now, and maybe it’s not the right time or the place” she said consoling him “Okay maybe. Do you want to grab a bite to eat on our way home?” he asked shyly “Yes sure” she said smiling and her heart thumped so hard she was afraid he would know. “Well, I guess I should go now, I have no more work here” he said when they got back home “Wait, can we meet tomorrow night for dinner” she asked as he stepped out of her house. “Yes we can, I’ll be here to pick you up” he said The next night when they reached the restaurant for dinner, Anita was surprised and happy, the place was on a beachside decorated with flowers everywhere and a table was set for two lit with candles. They sat down for a dreamy night together and after the dinner Rajat took her for a walk on the beach barefoot and while walking he proposed. “Anita, I have known you for a very short period of time but in this little time you have become the light of my life. When I’m not with you whether I’m sleeping or eating or taking a shower you are always on my mind, will you accept this token of my affection and be my wife?” he asked sitting on one knee Read the next part here
