The accidental gift

Life is never easy and if you are different then the world tries to make a fool of you and pull you down as hard as they can. Anna watched the sun come up for the fifth day in a row. Sleep had eluded her since the accident. It was not easy for her. She would get severe headaches which would make her scream deafeningly. Then she would start hearing voices from everywhere, people talking, laughing, and crying. She didn’t know what to do or who to call for help. She was going crazy with no one to hear her cry for help. One of her friends Naomi came to her apartment one day and got really scared looking at her state. She asked her – “Ann, what’s going on? What is bothering you? You’ve been so secluded lately, you don’t talk to anyone. Please tell me what the matter is?” “Something major has happened Naomi. I don’t know if you will believe me or not.” Anna told her. “You’re scaring me now. Please tell me what happened?” Naomi asked me. “Don’t think too fast, there are so many questions in your head right now, slow down girl” Anna told her. “What do you mean so many questions? How do you know what is in my mind?” Naomi asked baffled. “Well, first of all it’s written all over your face and secondly I can hear your thoughts. I can exactly hear what you are thinking right now.” Anna said. “What the hell. How is that possible?” “I don’t know how this happened, but I can hear people’s thoughts. I’m really scared. Please help me sort this out.” “Wow, I mean wow; this is something you don’t hear every day. What do you feel right now? Tell me everything.” Naomi asked. “I’m not fine, not at all. I get these headaches which are beyond control. You have to help me otherwise I’ll go out of my mind.” “Ok, ok let me think who can help us and keep this a secret? Who can we trust this much?” “Hey, there is a professor at the university, he can help us. Come on let’s go.” Naomi said. “How do you know you can trust him? How do you know him?” Anna asked her. “I just know, just trust me, he’s the only one who can help. Now let’s go.” Naomi said pushing Anna to the door. As they reached the campus, they found that the professor was giving a lecture so they decided to wait outside. An hour had passed when the professor came out, before Anna could say anything Naomi blurted out everything. “Maybe we should take this to my office.” The professor said. We all sat down in his office and the professor asked Anna – “When did this all start? Tell me everything.” “It started about a month ago, I suddenly had this splitting headache, but I didn’t bother and went to work anyway. It didn’t settle down so I took a painkiller. But the pain got worse and when I got home it got worse, I was screaming my guts out. Then the pain eventually subsided but I started hearing voices. People thinking from everywhere, he street, down the hall. Then I passed out after that.” Anna explained. Professor had his hand on his chin, he was thinking deeply. Then after a minute he asked Anna – “Has anything like this ever happened to anyone in your family, relative, grandparents?” “Not that I know of, no.” “Hmmm, you know most of the people use only a fraction of the brain in their whole life. But sometimes that’s not true; we are able to use our brain better than most people. You have been given a gift for a reason. Use it well. But do not exhaust yourself and I mean it because it can have serious repercussions.” The professor explained. You can call me anytime you want. Here is my card. And be rest assured your secret is safe with me.” The professor said in the most genuine manner. We left the campus a little assured that we are in safe hands and everything will be fine. Anna said she wanted to put her gift to good use. She wanted to help people. This gift has been given to her for a reason and she’s going to use it well. Anna looked at Naomi and gave her a wink. Naomi knew that their lives have changed forever and will be full of surprises.
